The Eagle Project – Canada (1993-1999)
Environmental Health
|
The Effects on Aboriginals from the Great Lakes Environment (EAGLE)
Project was designed to examine the effects of environmental change on
Aboriginal peoples in the Great Lakes Basin (Canadian side of the
border). The goal of the EAGLE Project was to blend the traditional
knowledge of First Nations communities with scientific information to
assess the effects of environmental contaminants on all aspects of the
health and well-being of Aboriginal people.
The EAGLE Project was conducted as a partnership study between the First
Nations communities in the Great Lakes Basin, the Assembly of First
Nations (AFN), the Chiefs of Ontario (COO) and Health Canada.
The EAGLE Project undertook several programs, which included an Eating
Patterns Survey, a Health Survey, a Fish and Wild Game Sampling program,
a Contaminants in Human Tissues sampling program and a Socio-Cultural
program.
