April 2000 - Our united struggle, after 12 long years, to keep a radioactive waste facility out of Ward Valley has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams! However, even though Governor Gray Davis said that Ward Valley is a "dead issue", his statement was not an official declaration. Neither he nor the State of California has made the demise of the Ward Valley project "official". The latest "nail in the coffin" of the proposed Ward Valley Radioactive Waste dump was the dismissal of the lawsuit brought by US Ecology against the Department of Interior in the Court of Federal Claims. 1997
- Nov. - GET READY TO DEFEND WARD VALLEY! We're drawing a line in the sand to stop the dump and protect sacred Indian land, the desert tortoise, and the Colorado River.
- Oct. - An old M-1 anti-tank mine that was detonated on the site of the proposed Ward Valley nuclear waste dump is making political ammunition for project opponents.
- Jan. - DOE holds meeting of their "Host State Technical Coordinating Committee" to discuss the proposed Ward Valley "low-level" radioactive waste dump. The DOE invited state and nuclear industry to make presentations, but failed to invite the impacted tribes along the Colorado River.
1998
- Jan. - BLM is planning to issue permits for tritium testing at the proposed Ward Valley Radioactive Waste Dump as early as Jan. 16.
- Feb. - BLM to attempt to close Ward Valley at midnight.
- Feb.- Federal Deadline to Close Ward Valley Expires Hundreds occupy "Ground Zero". Tribes and supporters declare "We are not leaving!
- Feb. - Elders Occupy Ward Valley - Call for Support - Elders and tribal members of the 5 tribes vow not to leave until project is called off.
