This song was written as a challenge to myself to do something about climate change. I hope it will inspire you to join us, the Citizens Climate Lobby volunteers. Help us pass national legislation that places a fee on the carbon in fossil fuels (a fee equal to the damage it does) so we can transition away from fossil fuels to a clean, renewable energy economy. Go to citizensclimatelobby.org for more info.

At The Altar Of The Dollar

Way up high on the mountain tops of the oldest mountains ever know
Rich men want to blow them up for a dirty black vein of coal.
Then they lie to me and you, telling us coal plants are clean
Not when they spew out CO2, arsenic, soot and mercury.
Now our health and mother earth are in decline
And climate scientists tell us “we’re running out of time”.

Cause we desecrate our Mother
and we disappoint our Father.
We keep on burning fossil fuels
At the altar of the dollar.

Hey hey hey hey
Hey hey hey hey
Hey hey a hey hey
Hey a hey hey

Drilling a mile below the waves in the gulf of Mexico.
Oil men said that “it was safe” until the Deep Horizon blew.
Eleven people died that day, clear blue waters turned to grew.
BP told us they would pay but that didn’t make it all OK.
A spill that bad should have made it plain to see.
We need to replace fossil fuels
With cleaner energy.

Cause we desecrate our Mother
and we disappoint our Father.
We keep on burning fossil fuels
at the altar
at the altar
of the dollar.

Hey hey hey hey
Hey hey hey hey
Hey hey a hey hey
Hey a hey hey

North of the boarder in Canada is a place where the Caribou roam.
Big corporations say “so long” as they destroy their home.
They scape off the plants and animals, they scrape off the flower and bees and the soil.
With no respect for the land or the people, they’ll do anything for tar-sand-oil.
Now they want to build a new pipeline across our lands.
We have to put a stop to this.
We have to take a stand.

Cause we desecrate our Mother
and we disappoint our Father.
We keep on burning fossil fuels
at the altar
at the altar
of the dollar.

Hey hey hey hey
Hey hey hey hey
Hey hey a hey hey
Hey a hey hey

Now let me tell you bout the Golden Toad, that use to live and it lives no more.
First victim of climate change, it came out to mate but there was no rain.
God made us all two by two, we send the Golden Toad back to you.
We burn fossil fuels when you give us sun. Lord forgive us for what we’ve done.

Iey Iey Iey Iey
Iey Iey Iey Iey
Iey Iey a Iey Iey
The Golden Toad is gone.

We desecrate our Mother
and we disappoint our Father.
We keep on burning fossil fuels
at the altar
at the altar
of the dollar.
